Aha! moments

My first Aha! moment was when I learned how to create a blog. I enjoyed reading fashion blogs but I didn't know how to create one. Because of blogging in class, I also learned how to embed videos onto the page.

I experienced another Aha! moment was when I learned the difference between PR and advertising. After reading chapter 12 and 13, I learned that public relation protects the reputation, the image of the company where as advertisement involve marketing and selling the company.

After watching "This Film is Not Yet Rate" directed by Kirby Dick,I learned that the members of the MPAA are unqualified for the job and that the rating system is unreasonable. Now, I have a stance against the rating system and I believe that when they show violence, they should allow the tragic consequence of fighting instead of rating lower for unrealistic violent movies.

Media Ethics/ Law

One of the most recent media law case from 2010 is Lindsay Lohan's lawsuit against E*Trade for $100 million dollars for using a "milkaholic" baby character that seems to represent Lindsay Lohan. Based from the text, this type of media law is invasion of privacy. The area of privacy law is appropriation. According to this law, individuals own the right to their own image and name, so if companies want to utilize an individual's name, they would need the individual's permission. In my opinion, I think this is a bad move from Lindsay Lohan because the lawsuit sounds unprofessional and childish. She already has a bad reputation for partying and going to rehab. By continuing this act, she'll just make a fool of herself even more especially if she loses. In addition, I think it will be difficult for her to prove that the baby represented her, there is no solid evidence.

ads

The ad I choose to analyze is Verizon Wireless commercial. Two propaganda techniques used in this commercial are common man and repetition. Throughout the commercial, Verizon interviews different ordinary people who are involved with the engineering aspect of the Verizon company. The ordinary people connects to the audience by using simple and ordinary language to convince the viewers that they in fact just everyday people. It wins the confidence of the audience by telling a message that everyday people are working behind the service of Verizon so it is dependable. Another technique used in this commercial is repetition. Towards the end of the ad, a man asks "why is Verizon the best network" and all the people answers " you are looking at it". Again the idea of ordinary people working behind Verizon convinces the audience to become more confident with Verizon.

internet

After counting the list of social networking sites from Wikipedia, there was about 180 networking sites available in the internet. Most of the sites listed are pretty new to my knowledge except for Xanga, twitter, tumblr, and facebook. Other social networking site that aren't listed in Wikipedia include Myspace. One social networking site that I have never heard of is IRC-Galleria. Based on Wikipedia, IRC-Galleria was found by Tomi Lintelä and it is the largest social networking site from Finland.Users must put at least one photo in IRC-Galleria to become a member for this site. Facebook is the social networking site I used on a daily bases. I used facebook as a way for me to connect with my childhood friends, high school friends, and current friends. Everyday I check my facebook for comments and messages, I also enjoy looking at my friend's pictures that they uploaded so that we can still be connected even though she/he might live in a different city. So far facebook hasn't gotten me in trouble and I hope to prevent any in the near future. I just have to remember to avoid adding people I don't know for 100%.

movies

My favorite movie of year 2009 is definitely UP. Up was overall graphically amazing. It was an uplifting film that contained adventure , humor, and drama. When I saw this movie with my sister , we both cried and laughed throughout the movie.I thought it was clever for Pixar and Disney to use two completely opposite characters and create a happy ending where these two characters learn a lesson about life.

My all time favorite movie is cinderella man . I think Cinderella Man was compelling and inspirational. The actors in this classic film had great acting skills. Whenever Jim Braddock fought in the ring to put bread on the table it made me cry.

Three books most influential in my life

1) One of my first most influential books in my life is the Bible. Ever since I was a little girl, I was raised in a family with Christian faith. So throughout my life, I have always heard bible verses that had positive influences. When I face hardships, I often seek the Bible to comfort me with His words. One of the most influential verses that I found is in - 1 Corinthians , it is "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves." (1 Corinthians 13:4-7, Bible). This verse really helps me to see the importance of life and how I should approach it.

2) The second most influential books that I read is The Diary of a Young Girl. I read this book when I was in middle school. Anne Frank's experience of saving her family and friends from the Nazis seemed so surreal yet the fact that it was a true story , awes me to this day. Every time I read this book, I am always at the edge of my seat. I am excited, frightened, amazed, and surprised. For these reasons, I conclude that The Diary of a Young Girl is one of the most influential books I read in my life.

3) The third most influential novel is The Kite Runner. I read this book when I was a senior in high school. This book was written by one of the modern writers, Khaled Hossenini. I say that this book is most influential because it contains all the aspects of a good novel. The conflict between two cultures, friendship, twists and turns in the story, brotherhood, guilt because of Amir's inability to save his friend, fatherhood, going back to Afghanistan to face the fear that had haunted him all throughout his adult life, and love. With all these concepts in the story, I believe that it is one of the most influential novels I read in my life.

Research Project

After reading chapter two, I decided to a gender analysis of how music videos affect its young audiences. By doing content analysis, I will analyze how many times women are presented negatively in music videos. After doing a content analysis, I will use the survey method to ask audiences whether females depicted in music videos are models of how young women now behave. When I gather both information, I will compare and contrast them. From social learning theory, I can predict that my results will be positive that young women are degraded and presented negatively in music videos and that most young women act as how females are depicted in music videos.

Media Autobiography

In my life, I am surrounded by different types of mass media including books, newspapers, magazines, movies, recording, radio, television, and the internet. From a young age, I spent my days watching television and reading books, which were both introduced by my parents. Because I immigrated to U.S., I had a hard time reading. Since I wasn’t a native English speaker, I did not enjoy reading. Instead, I watched many hours of children shows such as Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, and PBS kids. As I advanced in school, I was introduced to many types of books. My favorite novels include One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey and A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. Even though the computer has been around for ages, I did not own a computer until eighth grade. Before computers became mainstream, television and books were my only source to the real world. Soon after, when computers became more popular for school work, I used the internet as my lifeline to the world. Among the eight different types of mass media, I believe that the most important is the internet. Since internet is a converging medium, I like the fact that it can be used to merge different contents. For instance, internet is used to see the news and listen to the radio. Another type of mass media I enjoy is reading magazines. Since I have an interest in fashion, I enjoy reading fashion magazines such as Nylon and Elle. Lately, I have also enjoyed reading fashion blogs and internet news articles about health. Overall, I am surrounded by different types of mass media 24/7 and these different types of mass media have influenced my lifestyle.
